Am I distracting myself?

I do a lot of different things. And I’m currently wondering whether I’m just distracting myself with some of them, distracting myself from the main thing I need to be working on.

There’s my freelance work, which I do less of these days. It doesn’t take much effort to promote. Just the time to deliver the service.

I ran a creative writing workshop last week, and I’d love to do more of those. However that would take effort to find the groups to do that with, so it’s in the background while I mull over who else I might suggest it to.

I draw my weird penguin doodles, and there are more things I could do with Penguin. I might create an A to Z of life according to Penguin. But he’s a procrastination outlet mainly.

And I write on this blog, which I consider to be a side project, even though it’s part of my business philosophy. That takes time to write, find imagery, publish, create social media graphics.

I’m also training to be a coach, which takes up time doing the lessons and the practice. As well as figuring out the admin and marketing side of this and where it fits with my Untangling work. Of course it’s a valuable skill to learn, and I’m enjoying doing the course.

My main thing though is the Untangling, where I’m currently reshaping the packages and trying to understand its use and value better so I can communicate that more clearly. Which is hard and can be frustrating, despite the fact I have helped lots of clients and they’ve said nice things about how I’ve helped them.

So maybe I am avoiding it a little bit?

It’s easier to pick up a piece of paper and draw a penguin than it is to figure out the intricacies of selling a service that I feel like I’ve reached a plateau with and can’t work out what’s next. I can also guarantee that if I share a penguin on Instagram a few people will like it and comment. They don’t always with my other posts.

But then again, these other activities do serve a purpose for me – as a creative outlet, as somewhere I can experiment with new ideas and ways of doing things. So I don’t plan to get rid of them – just to keep refining where they fit into my working life.

I think it’s a good thing to take a step back and assess your portfolio of work and creative projects regularly, to make sure you have the right balance. In my case, clearly I need one of my own Untangling sessions to help me with that….

What about you? Do you also do a lot of different things?
