I run an online creative writing workshop every so often (usually every couple of months, but I have a few more coming up this autumn).
I love doing this, because it gives me a chance to write too!
I enjoy sitting down for 5-10 minutes and writing something about my surroundings or in relation to a prompt. It just relaxes my brain – and I get a nice description or a weird and random short story out of it at as well. And sometimes I share those online.
I started doing this many years ago when I took part in something called the 30 Day Challenge (long story, I’ll share that here another time). During that challenge I learned about the concept of setting a timer for 15-20 minutes and doing focused work on a specific project. In the case of my 30 Day Challenge project, it was to create a blog. So every day I set a timer and wrote for 20 minutes. And I really enjoyed doing it. I was originally going to write factual blog posts, but ended up writing creatively, inspired by my surroundings and whatever had gone on during the day.
So that’s where the idea for these sessions originated. In my walks, my noticing my surroundings, me taking note of details of conversations or events. And weaving them together in a creative tale or description.
And since life got busier with being a mum and a freelancer/coach, I stopped having time for that writing – and I missed it. So running creative writing sessions is a great way to get what I need for my creative soul and help other people to do that too.
How can you join in with this and do some creative writing yourself?
There are two ways you can try this – either by buying a pdf download, or by attending an online session. I’ve provided some details of these below.
Creative prompts download
I created a pdf download that I sell for £5, which has a selection of these writing prompts in (and also some ideas on going for photo walks).
You can buy a copy of that here:
Creative writing workshop (online)
And if you enjoy trying out those prompts, you may also enjoy the live sessions, online on Zoom. I’m in the UK, and these sessions usually start at around 11.30am. They currently cost £15, although this may increase in January.
You can find more details about the sessions here, and you can book the September and December ones. (There will be an October one too, so sign up to the mailing list to find out the details of that one.)
How do you practice creative writing?
What sort of things work for you when it comes to creative writing?
Do you go to things like workshops or online coworking, or do you prefer to work through some prompts or a short course by yourself in your own time?
