I don’t do a lot with video, so the other day I made a video to explore a few reasons why and what I’m planning to do about that.
Very few people saw the video because of social media algorithms and people being busy having a life outside social media, so I thought I’d reshare it here in a written format.
So why don’t I use video much?
Comfort zone
Videos are not something I have created very often – I tend to share my thoughts in writing. I’ve sent videos to my mailing list, and I’ve done a few for a course I ran a couple of years ago. But other than that, I’ve not really done much.
However, I never used to like sharing photos until I worked with a couple of coaches a few years ago. They persuaded me that actually sharing photos was a good thing to do. So reluctantly I tried to share photos more, and eventually it became second nature.
So I guess it’s the same with video. I’ve only started experimenting with it recently after I had some really good tips from another freelancer (who is an expert in this), which got me got me thinking about how I could use video.
What to talk about
I think the second thing that holds me back from using video more is knowing what to actually talk about that people are going to find interesting.
That aspect is definitely work in progress for me. I’ve got a few thoughts on how to do that. And it ties in with the work I’m doing on my marketing messaging and refining my description of my ideal clients. But I know that it will come.
Marketing strategy
And the last reason I have hesitated to use video is because I wondered – is it actually the right marketing strategy for me? Just because everyone else is making videos and sharing them on social media, it doesn’t mean I should. It doesn’t mean that it’s even going to work for me.
So I think, again, that’s going to be about experimentation. Figuring out the style of video that might work, figuring out what to talk about. And also where to share it, because it might be that sharing it on social media is not useful. It might be that actually, that’s something I can just do for my mailing list that adds value to the people who are particularly interested in what I have to say.
In conclusion
One way or another video definitely needs to feature somewhere. It’s just finding a way to use it that’s right for me.
So those are my thoughts on video, and why I don’t do much of it, and what I’m planning to do about it. Do you use video to talk about topics of interest to your clients and potential clients?
