What is my blog about?

I’m just getting back into a routine after the school summer holidays, and one of the things I’ve decided I want to do more of is writing blog posts. So what will the new posts be about?

I’ve been blogging for over ten years – starting many new blogs during that time.

The first one I created was for a fundraising challenge, to keep our supporters updated on what we were doing. The next one was for a 30 day creative challenge, where the blog was my project, and the audience was the other people doing the challenge – plus those of my social media friends who were interested. And then I created one which I kept adding to and sharing widely for many years, but which just became too confusing to navigate because the topics were so varied.

Right now I just have this one, which I have been sharing occasionally and quietly!

So what is my blog about? What type of blog is it? I think there are a few types of blog – the lifestyle blog, the sponsored blog and the business blog.

The lifestyle blog could be a diary, it could be a series of thoughts and ponderings on a topic, it could be a way of sharing some creative writing or photos. My fundraising blog was an example of this type of blog, as were most of the other ones I created. I think this one has the feel of a lifestyle blog, even when it crosses into business topics.

The sponsored blog is one that may have a mixture of informational posts and chatty posts, some of which might be sponsored in some way. For example local blogs about things to do for mums with young children – the blogger might get free entry to attractions in return for a write-up on their blog and social media pages, or they might receive money for displaying adverts on their blog.

The business blog relates to a specific business, and shares tips or thoughts on topics that will be relevant to potential clients and other people working in the same line of work. A business blog is one of many possible digital marketing tactics, and so will integrate with other elements of the marketing strategy and align with key messages.

Since I became self-employed nearly ten years ago, I’ve tried to create business blogs on a few occasions, but they just don’t fit with my creative process. My best blog posts are the ones that just pop into my head and want me to sit down and write them, they just flow out from my fingers like this one has.

Business strategists would advise me to think about my ideal client, and write about topics that will solve their problems or speak to their pain points. But having tried to write that type of post in the past and not really enjoyed it or stuck with it, I’m going to go my own way with this blog. I’m going to write about whatever I feel like writing about.

In the past, my blog posts have always found their way to the people that need to read them. So I trust that this time they will do the same.

So what is this blog about?

You’ll probably find me writing about creativity and ideas, and about the intersection of creativity with self-care and personal development. If those are subjects you’re interested in, you can follow this blog, sign up to my newsletter, or you can keep an eye out on social media for my updates. (Mailing list and social links are here.)

It’s always nice to have feedback, even though I’m writing because I want to and not to please anyone else – so if something particularly resonates with you please do comment or send a message to let me know. 😊
