The benefits of going for a walk during the working day

I haven’t been very good at doing it this week, but I do try to get out for a walk during the working day, even if just a 5 minute wander around the block.

I find that as well as the obvious benefit of exercise and fresh air, it also helps with other things.

Come up with new ideas. There’s something about freeing my brain from sitting in front of a computer that allows new ideas to pop into my head.

Solve problems. Going for a walk allows my brain to mull over different options and often come up with a solution I hadn’t previously thought about.

Switch off from whatever is going on. In a very busy day, sometimes it’s nice to just switch off from all the stuff that needs doing, and just be present somewhere. Even if it’s in a small field with a couple of dogs running around it.

Calm down if something is annoying or frustrating me. Similarly, if I’m frustrated by someone, a situation or a conversation I’ve had, going outside into the fresh air gives me a sense of perspective and helps me go back to the situation calmly.

Peace and quiet. As an introvert, my brain gets clogged up with thoughts and other people’s energy. A walk helps clear my head and refreshes my brain!

Being more creative. I take photos while I walk, often of small details. And I often feel inspired to write when I get home, so if I’m going on a longer walk I try to schedule it when I know I have that time available to write afterwards.
