I was thinking about creativity yesterday. Specifically I was noticing that it was the common theme between a few of the things I’m doing in my work. But from different angles.
Business and marketing support for creatives – artists and writers. Coaching for creatives more broadly – encompassing people who write and create as well as people with creative minds and a lot of ideas. My creative writing workshops. And creativity in teams and how different people contribute to the process. All those things involve different types of creativity from me or my clients.
And then this morning I was feeling grumpy, and I decided to go for a walk, take some photos and think about something creative I could do. So I remembered the role of creativity in my own life, and noticed that I’ve ended up trying to surround myself with it.
I recalled times when I was really not enjoying my working life, and how I turned to creativity at those moments. Without realising that I was seeking sanctuary in it, looking for something within me that I needed.
Sometimes that has been creative writing or blog writing, sometimes taking photos, more recently I’ve added penguin doodles to the mix, and once I even created a short creative course which I tried out on some friends.
I think it’s why I’ve moved away from certain places or groups, where creativity wasn’t being embraced or appreciated. Needing to find communities that understand the importance of creativity in its many forms. Knowing that creativity is part of what makes us unique, what makes us who we are, and is how we express that.
Many of my thoughts on creative life are the same thoughts just expressed in different ways, as I go round in circles, adding layers to my thinking. But I’m definitely seeing a link, a theme. Creativity being the backbone of what I’m doing, in many different ways.
How do you interact with creativity? What is it to you?
