Things I love about being a freelancer:
- I get to choose what type of work to do and who to work with
- I have plenty of variety in the types of projects I work on each year
- I set my own working hours, as long as client work is completed when needed
- I have flexibility built into the way I manage my time, so when my young daughter is off school for some reason I can usually take some time out to look after her or entertain her
- I can go for a walk and take photos (like the one below) during the working day if I feel like it, and not feel guilty for doing so.
Things I don’t like about being a freelancer
- The times when there’s not much work around and I start wondering if I’m actually useful to anyone
- The phases of uncertainty, indecision and frustration I invariably have every year when I come up with a new approach or service and it doesn’t go anywhere, or when I can’t decide where I want to focus
- The temptation to compare my situation to other people’s success as shared by them on social media – especially when going through one of the above two scenarios.
Do you have any thoughts to add to those?
